In A World Full Of Beauty...
In a world full of beauty
...it is hard to feel anything but ugliness.

This is about the pressure in society to conform to the high expectations that the media and industry repeatedly shoves down our throats. It's so hard to feel beautiful when we are confronted with perfection. It is hard to feel thin when a girl walks into a store and there are racks of size zero jeans. It is hard to feel beautiful when a girl is raised playing with a Barbie doll who had unrealistic proportions. It is hard to feel beautiful while flipping through the glossy pages of magazines and seeing the girls with their perfect airbrushed skin, their perfect perky breasts, and their perfect hair & expensive designer clothing that the average girl can not afford. It's hard to feel beautiful.

This is a conceptual collage piece that I completed this afternoon when I skipped my art history class. I had a creative spurt and I had to get it out of me... gotta take advantage of that while you can!

(update 12/20/05: aww! ugh! my boyfriend, Joe, hates this thing! I could tell by the look on his face when I showed it to him!)

Tip:
Lots of stuff going on here...

First I took an old SX-70 Polaroid of myself in an UGLY wig and UGLY dress and I sliced it open with an exacto knife. I separated the pos + neg and washed off the white gunk under hot running h20.

I then painted the Polaroid pos with gouache and oil paints.

After that I smooshed the pos to the neg and glued that down onto a piece of scrap corrugated cardboard.

After that I added some sequins around a red painted border.

Then added some gold glitter.

Then super glued a decapitated Barbie doll head into the corner.

To complete the piece I added chunky gold glitter and super-fine gold glitter. I sprayed the finished piece with fixative to keep the glitter on.
