White Blanket, Tan Beach, Cool Day, Carn
We can drive twenty minutes and hit the beach. Or, we can drive an hour through some of Sonoma County's most congested traffic and hit the uber-chic Marin County's shores - which is what we did today in order to get to Fort Cronkhite, an old Army base whose beaches cough up wonderful little bits of carnelian, a red-orange variant of chalcedony, once prized by the Romans to make signet rings as it has the interesting property of being wax-resistant. We bring a wee glass jar and spend hours (okay, minutes) on our bellies just staring at the sand looking for the bright little rocks. On a good day, we'll collect maybe thirty pieces - altogether maybe filling a soda bottle lid. Turns out that not so far away, down a rocky cliff, one can find fist-sized chunks of the stuff, provided you avoid the Coast Guard patrols.
