Nobody seems to know where the theory that goldfish have three-second memories originally comes from. In fact, numerous studies have proven that fish actually have good memories and that goldfish can recognise their owners, learn and remember things for many months.

I suppose it all began as a justification for people who were keeping them in tiny bowls - giving them the comforting illusion that by the time their fish swam round the bowl again, it had already long forgotten all the other endless times it had done it.

All those fish owners thinking their pet was happy in there when really it was probably going nuts.
