(Not So) Alone at 4 A.M.
Another street, another cold, foggy night. This time I had company, though. A guy rode up on his bike and we had the following exchange:
Guy On Bike: What are you taking a picture of?
Me: Just what you see. [Gesturing forward with my hand]. The fog and the street.
G.O.B.: But there isn't anything there. Why would you take a picture of that?
Me: Why do any of us take pictures? We see something we like and we take a photo of it, that's all.
G.O.B.: But you're taking a picture of nothing.
Me: Not nothing: the bench, the fog, the lights, the street.
G.O.B.: Huh. [Rides away.]
There I was in the freezing cold night, hands aching, waiting for this guy to leave so I could concentrate on taking a picture I was excited about from the minute I set up the tripod. So much for the "alone" part of four A.M.
