strength, honor and luck
left hand : the War Medal my grandfather brought back from World War One for he had the chance to survive the slaughter
right hand : his baionett
(of course I will not accept any simple knife : make it a very special one for very special and personal reasons...)
baionett (not sure about the english translation) : this knife was fixed at the the rifle to make assault on ennemies trenches and kill in close combat. I remember my grandfather asking : "do you know why the sword of this weapon has curved trenches on each side and on top ? To let the blood flow faster. And why it has not a flat and thin blade, but a fat triangular one ? To create wounds with 3 sides so that they don't close easilly and are less curable".
About the medal : he gained it after having repaired a telephone line betwwen front line and headquarters under a huge all-night bombing : each time the line was cut by an explosion, he went out underfire and repaired it. He was not a hero, just obeying orders. The rest of the time, he was coming twice a day with the soup, rain or shine, peace or combat, from the kitchen to the frontline, with his mule*.
He never told me about anything. Just that : each time he had a permission to go back home, he bought a watch for my grandmother and made a child to her. My mother has 3 sisters, and I still have those 4 watches.
That is what our grandparents have been through for 4 years.
* yes schlexi's grandfather was also part of the massacre
