ϋberorgan

"Wonderful framing, great light, and I'm familiar with the subject (ie the enormous organ)"
Went to the Getty Center saturday, showing an out-of-towner how LA does ostentatious-on-a-hill-massive-museum/architectural- marvel.

And though, once again, I was disappointed by how much empty space there is within the museum, how many rooms lay unused, and how utterly uninterested I am in furniture from old-timey times, I was blown away by one particular exhibit.

Apparently there's this artist named Tim Hawkinson, and apparently he's some kind of genius. A giant photo-collage of a squid, make from photos of lips, a sculpy dinosaur vertebrae made from little men rowing, and, of course, the ϋberorgan.

The ϋberorgan is massive, hanging above us all in the Center's main hallway. Built using items you can find at any Home Depot, the damn thing is, well, it's an organ. Using some kind of steampunk engine that reads black dots with a light sensitive scanner thingy, the huge bellows basically fart music, slow, strangely melodic, like a lazy whale singing.

And it is majestic.

Sometimes, every once in awhile, i just really fucking dig art.
