Queen Tamora’s Solidarity
I tried to combine various topics in one image. The title and content are based on the English writer William Shakespeare’s play “Titus Andronicus” - in particular on the famous scene of Lavinia’s rape (Act II, Scene 3), the Tamora’s approval for her sons, Demetrius and Chiron, to violate her, who also stab Bassianus, the man she loved, infront of her eyes.
The queen’s two sons do not only rape her but disfigure her; they cut out her tongue and hack off her hands.
She is protagonist of one of Shakespeare’s most brutal and disturbing sczenes and his most suffering heroine.
But what I find interesting is the queen’s permission to rape Lavinia, the short conversation between the two women, their roles, their motivations, their views. Lavinia prefers to be dead (especially now that her lover has been murdered) to raped and disgraced, she pleas to Tamora for mercy, but is dismissed.
Of course the play gives reasons and has its way of explaining whose intentions create which situation but I seeit in a larger context, in the context of “women solidarity“, solidarity from women to women. I fear in modern (western?) society - there is non! Especially when men join the gaming board. Women become the worst enemy to their closest friend. No solidarity.
Simple example: A man and another fight, they punch each other’s faces - and then? They go for a drink.
A woman and another fight, and it will be an eternal spiral of violence and fury. They will do anything to win the game.
I have so often watchedit in close circles, experienced it myself,heard of it - I find it so contradicting, so paradox, one would expect it to be the other way around.
