Eyes Closed
I shot these three pictures just a few days before the one year anniversary of the September 11 attack in downtown Manhattan, Liberty Island and Ellis Island. There was something hauntingly symbolic to me about this window at Ellis Island being covered. I know it was to protect the exhibits but to me it represented America closing its eyes to to the rest of the world. I put the three images together: the flag in the center. Liberty on the left, the drawn shade on the right. It seemed like the choice we were facing. I think we know which choice we ultimately made as a nation.
