Tod Brilliant Glows in the Dark
I've just gotta tell this one Tod Brilliant story: During his most recent trip to LA, Tod, myself and a friend of his were walking down a boardwalk near the beach, returning after a night of sushi and stories of mid-life crises. A small group of what can only be called thugs were coming at us from the opposite direction, several on bicycles. One drunkenly steered his bike into, and subsequently bumped, Tod's friend, at which point Tod turned around to face the guy, shouting a curt "hey" as he did so. I believed us to be doomed at that point, that I had misread Tod and he was in fact a silly White Man who did not know enough that to leave a motley crew of hoods alone. But instead of sealing our fate, he thrust a small flask of Wild Turkey brand whisky into the bike-rider's palm, instantly becoming best friend to them, hero to me. He said, "here ya go, looks like you guys need this," to which they responded with "yeahs!" and "all right"s, going so far as to invite him to a party the next weekend.
