when you really want to get a good sunset sky, you have got to underexposure the picture. if you don't do that, the camera will lighten up the dark areas of the picture, which also leads to a brighter sky without nice colors. try to close the aperture for at least one step.
if you use a sx-70 camera, turn the correcture-wheel to the black area.
