THE NASCHMARKT
I was looking through a Sotheby's British and Continental Catalog from 2004 when I saw a painting that represented quintessential Time-Zero colors. The print in the book was quite small so I took out my closeup lens, but even then I couldn't get far enough away from the image to have it in focus while including the area I wanted. In any case, photographing art requires that one bring something different to the piece. Because I was really concerned with the essence of the colors, I decided to place it in a window with uneven light pouring across one side of it and forget about the requirement that it be in focus. Also the book was somewhat curled, so that the area curled back was in focus, giving it a pseudo photographic look. Anyway this is a much darker representation of a detail from Emil Barbarini's THE NASCHMARKT, VIENNA (oil on panel). He lived from 1855-1930. I highly recommend the soft pink and blue pastels of the painting, which are somehow simultaneously vivid and soft.
