Roots
These photos were taken years apart and i think they work very well together. The apple of course represents "original sin" and the inability to resist natural temptations and impulses. The winter tree carries the theme of nature into the second photo, but a very different kind of nature, a nature that is dark, in hibernation, untouchable. The church is a symbol of redemption and fear. Only here can we find forgiveness for the sins we commit by giving in to our impulses. We cannot control ourselves, but the church (and hence God) uses guilt and shame as weapons to defend our mortal souls. We constantly wander the orchard partaking of its fruits, but we go back to the church to be cleansed of our resulting impurities.
