from the back porch
...a familiar sight to me at grandma's house, as you go in the back door, which i've always used...

just back from california. my grandmother has been fighting cancer for years - renal, breast, bone. i received a call last week; she wasn't doing well, in hospital. I went back.

i sat with her, and with my family, and watched her struggle and fight. and crack jokes, and squinch her face when it was time for her medication. prompting a lot of familial angst and words and tears and hand-wringing and hugging. which is what I suppose we do as we work our way through.

as of now, she's better than when I first got the call, as much as she can be. she's supposed to be going home soon, to get away from the hospital jell-o, and be comfortable.

these things can be difficult at times, to absorb and deal when you're far away...

i like this shot from the porch...
