Barefoot
I used to walk around everywhere barefoot. I used to deliberately walk along the spiky gravel path in the garden, just to toughen up my feet. The theory was, if I was ever in danger and had to take off my high-heels and make a run for it, the soles of my feet would be so hard, that I wouldn't need to worry about hurting myself. But just try explaining that to people. They say things like "Why don't you just wear trainers wherever you go?" (Oh God! Why not? Why not? Because I'm a lady who can leap like a deer over stones and broken glass and rusty cans, not some kind of pathetic dweeb who wears trainers with a cocktail dress!)

I've stopped doing that now. The leathery texture started getting on my nerves. But I still think the basic principle was a sound one.
