The Dying Lion of Luzern
said to be the saddest stone carving in the world, it is a Lion fallen on its shield with a broken spear piercing his side.
The Lowendenkmal stands to represent the mercenary swiss soldiers that were slaughtered when the French King who they protected ordered them to lay down their weapons when Toulleries was stormed during the French revolution.
Below are written the names of the soldiers that died. Among them is my family name of Allemann.
Much to my annoyance, the monument was defaced a few days prior by paint bombs and the scaffold was erected to clean the graffiti but was not taken down until many days later.
