Boulmer Village
Boulmer village has a population of less than 300 persons, clustered around the Fishing Boat Inn. In past centuries it was the 'smuggling capital' of Northumberland, controlled in the 1740's and '50's by the notorious King of the Gypsies, William Faa 1 from his hideout 35 miles away at Yetholm on the Scottish borders. Two prominent fishing families, the Stantons and the Stephensons today launch their modern twin-hull potters and crabbers from the beach, although as late as the 1990's there were still a dozen traditional wooden 'cobles' (pronounced kerble in Northumbrian!) in operation. The coble 'Kindred' can be seen in the foreground of the picture in front of the village. She was built at Amble in 1968 and deregistered in 2010 and now lies at the mercy of the elements gently rotting away.
