^ not a tampon. i suppose, backthen, underwear as well as women hygienics or even simple bandages didn't existed, textiles were expensive. the blood ran down on the inner surface of the womens legs, down to their feet, and messed up everyday-items, such as chairs, beds or even wine. (just think of women stamping grapes in those huge tubs to produce tasty wine with their feet). virgin mary however, was ahead of her time and possessed several sheets of linen, which she re-used over and over again.
