Thank you for your answers. I understand better now.

Sincere references to holiness and godliness and so on are a little lost on me as an atheist, but I do comprehend there being value in individuals who serve as catalysts and coinduits to spirituality in society even without considering myself spiritual. The culture you describe strikes me as fascinating because holiness and spiritual authority don't appear to be regulated and governed by strictly hierarchic institutions as they are in contemporary Western culture.

`Looking forward to more impressions of that part of the world should you return anytime soon. Cheers.

^
I may be an atheist as well. But spirituality is present.
The boundries of hierarchic is clear, but instituations are not.
The British rule was present and they established instituations. The people gave up alot to democracy. But never really "got it"...
But now, they are in control of it. And it "just works."

Was your impression that that may be a way for communities to sustain the existence of individuals that may otherwise fall through the cracks? Or did it seem like this is a category of person that there simply is no equivalent to in contemporary Western society? How do sadhu benefit their communities? Or is that an irrelevant, Western sort of question?
^
It is a hard concept for westerns to understand... but it does exsist. Western culture may look down on it as well. Equivalent... I am not sure of.
As for thier culture, it is not fallen throught the cracks... Shlomo.Ben.Jussuf has met 50 of them... I have seen a few , and yet they exist from 1000's of years. BC even. Its a way of life. A search for enlightenment. They are gods. Blessed. Blessing the ones they encounter, yet they are still human. The society wants them there. They benefit from a connection to the gods. other reasons I may have not encountered or experienced.
Irrelevant question no. Western sort of question? maybe,

How would his jewelry, his clothing and his ganja pipe(s) not count as material values, speaking of the Swatch mystery?

Shlomo, your foreskin or lack thereof is almost as interesting as this old man's Swatch. Almost :-P

^
The story behind sadhu. They do walk around naked. And the only things they carry are the pipe and a wand thing with rings on it. As for jewelry, that told to be worn by there gurus for different meanings. ex. protection from daemons or something
They have no money so they can walk up to anyone and ask for food and drink. If you say no, you are saying no to god....
It's a really odd phenomena, I might even get it wrong at some point because I have not researched it completely but this is what I have been told from my friends that are native to India

We were talking about the pola ... and not about my foreskin ... come back to the Polaroid, Ulf ... plllllllleaaaaze.

Well, Shlomo, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, innit? (...assuming that your foreskin is no mo'.)

I wonder what the design on the face of the old man's Swatch shows, speaking of the photo again. Ahem.

^
odd enough.... sadhus are not allowed to have any material values as a vow... yet he has a watch in the photo. (Time is not a basic need in india, ha ha). And the watch is a material good. ???
Not to say I condemn him for owning one... it just puzzles me.

it's a crazy world ... i met at least 50 of them ... crazy people ... the craziest thing i found was in varanasi ... they have governmental bang shops ... you can legally buy drugs there ... and they offer "tourist opium chocolate" ... the original is made with ganga water, while the tourist opium chocolate is made with mineral water ... it's crazy world down there ... ;)

have you tried bang lassi yet? wild stuff ... be very very careful ... can be strong as hell ... i was on a "trip" for 3 days ...

^
I didn't get to experiment much... I never really do. But Gujarat is a dry state... no drug no drinks no meat... And I was working most of the time.

I guess I had to many Shillums with those old wise men ;) ...
^
yeah whats the deal with that too...
They are allowed to smoke but the locals aren't...
and they offer shillums to every forienger. ???
I have met some crazy sadhus. 7 to be exact.

But ... as Vishnu's got many many incarnations ... he could also be a follower of Krishna, Rama, etc. ... ;)

What else you wanna know ;)

2006-08-08 // 18:34:36
Shlomo.Ben.Jussuf
yes he's a saddhu .... he's not folowwing shiva ... you can see it on the sign on his foreskin ... this (i call it a "fork") is the sign of vishnu ... while shiva-devotees have three horizontal lines on the foreskin ;)

2006-08-08 // 18:15:56
Shlomo.Ben.Jussuf
Swami-jeeeee ...
Bum Shankar ;) ... oh damn ... i just saw he's a Vishnu devotee ... ok, forget the Bum Shankar! I'd better say: "Hari Bol!"

^
So wait tell me more...
This is a sadhu right? I thought they were Shiva devotees? Vishnu is cool. You have seen this man before?
