Don't you think it depends on the image? This one has such faint, delicate gradations in the sky and water that anything but black would cause irritation and make the image harder to read (in my opinion, anyway - Adams and Newton - ha ;-))

Yep your right, i just tried it on a black background on photoshop, it looks a lot better!

The birds in this picture strike me as very life-affirming, despite the fact that they're preying on dead fish.

And as an aside, I personally think that this picture would benefit from a black frame. I find all the white on Polanoid blinding here :-/

I know what you mean about the white, although you can see it clearer on black, i'm not a massive fan of black surrounds. Apparently the best is something about 80% reflective, ansel adams thought brown was best and helmut newton thought purple!
