You need to find a street that's not too well lit! Otherwise you might end up with too much 'distracting' light (like, from traffic lights or street lamps or whatever).

I used the cable release for the SX-70 for this shot, but there's another method with which you can achieve long exposures (even longer ones than are possible with the cable release): immediately after releasing the shutter, open the film door (just like you would to load film); this keeps the camera from closing the shutter until you close the film door again. (After closing it, you might have to push the shutter button once again to make the camera spit out the picture.)

It's a really neat little trick! (:
