I find it definitely helps to know my models first, which is why most of the time I either photograph friends or friends of my friends. And in the few cases where I'm photographing someone I don't otherwise know we always get coffee or dinner before working together.

^ yeah, it's taken me awhile to figure that out. now i take my time, talk to my models, i see the huge disparity in the quality of my work when i don't take the time to talk to them, make us both comfortable. but that's really a joy in and of itself, getting to know these people better, hearing their stories.
