yes, that apartment.

orezemit, i'm getting overwhelmed! so many beautiful polas here--and i've only just left a few comments! will make more screwdrivers, and the return. ;))

Shaken or stirred?
My guess is just vodka floating above the OJ.

yes, here we are. i started back here, voting and such.
(i could see the hotel from the old apartment's windows, by the way.)

i love when i click on my pola-vorites, and i get to see a different selection of my favorites. the last few times i've done that, this photo has been in that mix of ten. and it is simply the strongest, every time--in composition, in color, etc. etc. i love the movement, the cars racing and the people walking, and that time of evening
( or is it early morning?) when the lights have just flickered on ( or are about to go off!) just a beauty.

I love that hotel. Are you talking about the kicking, screaming, leaving apartment?

I do that same thing from time to time. Click on that fav link that is. Mostly with others favourites though. Always fun to see what pops up.

Thanks for those kind words about this photo. Brings back good memories every time I see it. Yes, it was evening. I'm not a morning person when visiting NYC.

I really, really like this, knowing NYC and the Chelsea

Still catching up.
My hotel of choice when I'm fortunate enough to visit the big city.
No place like it.
Thanks again.

Forgot to mention below *why* I like this pic so much.

The rich colors, of course.
The dusky, somewhat melancholy urban mood. (Kinda Hopper-ish, maybe?)
We can hear this scene as vividly as we can see it.
There's a certain gritty timelessness here that has nothing to do with nostalgia or sentimentality: this is 90s New York all right, but it could also be 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s New York & I love how the picture taken from room 703 really wouldn't be all that different no matter what the decade was.
All those fantastic verticals, diagonals, and triangles—like the one made by the left edge of the HOTEL sign, the yellow stripe down the street, and the left frame of the Polaroid.
The strong vertiginous plunge of the neon sign plus that blurred cab slipping past.
All these tiny little souls down on the sidewalk ...

A few thoughts before sleep.

1. The best shot of Manhattan I have seen on Polanoid.

2. Perfect cover image for Georges Simenon's "Three Bedrooms in Manhattan."

3. This really ought to be named shot-of-the-day. It should be on the cover. Tomorrow. Regardless of the math. We have lots and lots of nature shots on the cover. And they are lovely & deserving polas, absolutely. But I am looking through the sotd archive, and we've had something like 3 urban shots on the cover since the beginning of March, and one was of a quiet, leafy street in Edinburgh. I would *love* to see this pick up some more votes; I think the main page needs a little asphalt & neon.

night,
stefan

thanks for the kind words stefan.sorry my reply's taken so long. this really is one of my favourites of mine. i only had 3 shots left in the camera when i attempted this & this was the best of them. with a few more i do believe i could've gotten it a little better. i'd really like to see some red brake lights somewhere in there to balance the neon.probably wouldn't have had a jaywalker though. i just couldn't hang over the rail enough to get the A in chelsea. framing was pretty tough given the way leaning. i guess i was lucky to have held the camera still enough for a usable pic.

thanks again -

Really a cool image! I visited the lobby of the Chelsea just a couple of days ago...
^
thanks again.
i'll bet that lobby hasn't changed much.
i first stayed there in '86 & between then & '99 it hadn't really changed.

The CHELSEA!?!? ...one of my "things to do" before I move away is to spend a week at the chelsea! you gotta tell me is it how they say it is?... : D
^
I've stayed there twice & if I got the chance would do so again. I'm sure it's lost some of the nostalgic ambiance with age but it's still a cool place to stay or just sit in the lobby for a while. Interesting characters abound.

I can't believe you just saw this one! One of the reasons I decided to pick a few images for VINTAGE was to get some traffic for my earlier posts. This great shot only had like 40 views this morning. Lots of great stuff hiding on Polanoid that never/rarely gets seen.
There should be a page of radomly selected images with like 5+ votes & less than 50 views. Something to uncover some of the gems in hiding.

I'll have a pkg to send on monday. As Jenelle said - patience!
