^ thank you! yeah, those are the fruit capsules from the sweetgum tree. in the autumn and winter they dry up and fall off the tree. when i take a closer look, i find them really fascinating-- they have little spikes, and it looks like there are dozens of little birds' mouths open and ready to be fed, arranged along the circumference of the fruit. »link
