2008-01-15 // 19:23:37 jimsnade Hey, that's my grandmother and my mother in 1942
2007-12-12 // 19:20:54 Urizen I just wish the faces could be seen more clearly, but i suppose that's the whole point, right?
I'm reading a book about the scientific clues on the pursuit of happiness (a gift of my mother). One chapter is about the importance of memories for the emotional response of people and it's said that neurologist has discovered every time we remember a memory we re-save it, or better said, we rewrite it, but we don't rewrite pure data, we save the meaning associated to this memory at the moment we remember it. That's how it gets so degraded and distorted. So i think re-shooting and collage are a good metapher of what a memory is.

And that is why a diary is so interesting to read, years later, because then you really see this effect. Sometimes you find that you have remembered your whole situation and emotional responses wrongly. Basically, your memory edits your life for you - sometimes quite ruthlessly. So I suppose the direction your memory takes you in - whether it gives events a more positive or negative aspect - must influence how happy you feel about your life. I suppose happiness is not so much about what happens to you, but your way of processing it.
I tried lots of times to get a clearer shot of the faces, but this was the best I could do. I was using a close-up lens because the photograph is tiny.
2007-12-10 // 17:42:55 David_S just decided i was making waay too much of a fuss and felt suitably embarrassed!!
so deleted the posts - uploaded the tickl shots and quickly voted for my friend sarah's beautiful shot ... before skulking off and keeping a low profile ;)

Silly boy.
I got your e-mail. Will attempt to restore your faith in humanity this weekend...
I know what you mean, though. When you think back to the thrill of the early days when it felt like a little haven of creativity and every day promised surprise, inspiration and wonder, the site really has changed a lot. New members arrive and old members fall away, and everything has a different sort of balance now. But it was inevitable. Nothing can keep up that sort of momentum forever.
2007-12-08 // 02:38:33 David_S I cannot believe this has no comments (ok sorry that is a lie:) this place's taste has disappeared up its own backside recently) but I think this is beautiful so I will v and f its wonderfulness before I leave this site :) love d

Ah, David, you are confusing everyone with announcements made then deleted and new uploads!
Anyway, I was going to thank you for your comment on this. Of course, the best thing about it is the original photograph itself. It seems to say so much - and perhaps without even meaning to do so: the old fashioned fineness of the woman's dress, her elaborately sleek hairstyle, and the completely ludicrous size of the gleaming white ribbon in the little girl's hair, which almost dwarfs her entirely and makes her skin glow darker. The supreme effort that has gone into their outfits is so very touching to me. Somehow that silly ribbon seems to stand for so much love and hopefulness and undaunted cheerfulness, even at a time of fear. And this fits the story of these people and the way they lived their lives so well.
