belated congratulations and a comment (hope you can stand one more in thi slittle box :o))

i saw it right after you uploaded it. without any comments yet. i knew people would love this and the other ones as well.

i love absolutely everything about this one. the boardwalk, bench, metal thing, sand, see, sky... and that they all are so nicely parallel. plus the man, his hat and white beard.
and last, but not least, that it was taken on coney island...

bravo!

^

hmmm-- i think belated congratulations and comments are the best-- thank you so much!
i almost didn't take this pola, because i thought it might be a cliché--but then he just reminded me so much of a story that my sister wrote that i had to turn around and do it. as soon as i peeled it, the man left and it started to rain and i could already imagine my sister's reaction when i showed her this...and that made me excited, so i ran to the shelter of the nearest train station so the pola wouldn't get (more) wet, and on the train, it dried on the seat in front of me. and my sister was happy!

oh--thanks so much, matey. makes me want to carry this back to coney island and sit on this bench, waiting for the pirate to show up. i'll give this pola to him if he's not already set sail!

hard is a vulgar word. but my difficulty is finding the right word to suit the situation.

who the fuck has won 7 awards? that is incredibly vulgar. in retaliation against the system i will have voting turned off, or from now on only upload really bad self portraits.

^

well thank god. i hope the self portraits include non-vulgar tidbits like a cigarette drooping from your lips, a bandanna that smells faintly of "classic" 70s rock, and something about murdering cute forest creatures.

i hope you aren't so vulgar that you find yourself on the front page with this.

(that is a lie, but i find giving compliments hard...)

^

people who have won, say, 7 awards are the ones who really make my stomach turn. and most of them have really vulgar mustaches. (no lie! and i also find giving compliments difficult. hard is such a vulgar word.)

it is really a great thing to have your own pictures commented by others; for example my predilections are very often unhearded.
variety is the spice of life...

^

i agree-this is a special site for that reason (and for many others). i've learned a lot by reading comments left by others, and, many times, those comments are so perceptive that they add beauty to a photo. so happy to be a part of this group--so many inspiring and just wonderful people. (and one can never predict the predilections!)

he has a mobile, but a very thin wooden leg?
interesting.

and you didn't ask him? i guess you didn't because you knew he would start to scream. cannibal, you.

^

i am quiet and quick, like the best kind of thief...or body snatcher! actually, his is a metal leg. now don't you start to complain just because you have a wooden shoulder--it's like comparing digital to analogue. wooden limbs rule!

I've got a postcard on my desk that's titled "My grandfather is a pirate" and this could very much be a still from that. A one-legged pirate with an titanium leg (those wooden things are *so* 20th century) watching the waves roll in, reminiscing his past endeavours on the High Sea.

I vote and I fav, matey!

^

i love this comment! it was just what i saw when looking at him. (there was actually a large ship in the distance, and as i told cdr, i thought this man was going to withdraw a compass or treasure map from his pocket.) my sister is a writer; she wrote a short story about a man who builds ships in glass bottles. and when i saw this , i also saw her beautiful words, transposed over the scene.

hmmm, i think you mean the Daily Sport, rather the Sun. Both are trash, but the Sun forms much of our political policy.

so you are something of a spencer?

well she is/was (presumably the enquirer still thinks she's alive?) royalty only by marriage. i'm afraid your hopes for being a distant cousin are probably not true.

but you will be reassured to learn we share a common ancestor at least as close as 140,000 years ago. the mitochondrial Eve: »link

i hope you are happy with this? and rest assured my lawyers deem this close enough to write you into my will for some pack film.

^

i will claim you as a brother if you leave me pack film. a beautiful, flowery eulogy will also be given. after i do you in.

speaking of flowery--i owe you a nice guestbook message, but i am scattered these days. just wanted to tell you-- i read the note you left rabbitandsparrow about how to care for her daffodil, and it made me homesick! i have been longing for my gardens back home ever since i moved here, and wanting to talk to people who know about gardening! i got scared when i started forgetting the names of flowers not long ago, because i haven't been tending any. once in awhile, i look up a plant in my old gardening book--the last one i looked up was allium. anyway--sorry! will try to rehabilitate soon, and leave you a proper message!

This could also *be* an illustration in a Gorey book. And the next photograph — the merry ring of occult polar bears — is crying out for a Goreyesque caption.

oh! how true! i would love to hear your imaginings...

sorry. you have now replied. i was too impatient....

a thousand sorries.

well, if my grandfather's --- particularly biased --- family history is anything to go by i am decended from a line of welsh princes through Queen Elizabeth the 1st's court scientist/magician/right hand man (John Dee) onto the scoundrels and layabouts that make up the family today.

i think Andy probably took all this into account when looking for a doubles partner for his woman. and as i am a eunuch i was of no threat.

he remains my daffodil.

^

we are related! i think. because there was this article in the Enquirer (i imagine it's like the Sun, there--only worse, alien baby celebrities and such) that my grandmother cut out that said that our family name was somehow wound up with Princess Diana's family name--i don't know, the Enquirer didn't provide a detailed family tree. but i do expect to be treated veerrrry well when i come back to the homeland *wink wink*

pps// can you hurry up and reply please? i'm so bored. and that kind alert system that tells me when someone has replied, doesn't seem to be working at the moment. so i've cxme back to this picture three times now - on the offchance you'd have scraped your fingers on the keyboard - but no.

The ghost of Edward Gorey!

»link

^

oh my gosh! i've never seen Edward Gorey-- isn't that funny! that's not how i imagined him...maybe more like Crispin Glover...but, then again, that's too obvious. the real Edward Gorey is more like how I imagine Ernest Hemingway. in any case, i was so drawn to this man--my sister wrote a short story that he seemed to illustrate. and now i have the Gorey reference, too!

oh dam, i wish you hadn't asked about my very intimate relationship with andy.

he used to live no more than 2 miles from me. i had to move to get away from him. he was essentially ruining my life. his dad however is a beauty. he's the most prolific charity worker in the area - and i rarely see him without him rattling at least 20 tins at once.

see andy around all the time. in fact, if you ever came to cornwall i could introduce you to him, as he has drinking habits you could run a clock by. he's also a pretty keen surfer. however, i think his greatest passion is spending time on a sun bed, as he is virtually black. he did a reverse Michael Jackson.

what is more exciting to me. when i was about 18 i got roped into a doubles tennis match and my partner in the game was his squeeze (i hope they're still together) - the dark haired girl from bananarama. she was wearing a lime green boob tube and hot pants. needless to say, my backhand didn't perform that well.

^
honestly, i really can't believe that you have such a history with andrew--excuse me, "andy". are you, like, royalty in Cornwall, or something? next you'll be telling me that you have tea with the Duchess of Cornwall and once got roped into walking the queen mother's hairless cats! (was andy like your backyard daffodil, then?)

I love his wispy beard, foot, cane, chapeau.
A lovely day for 669.

^

oh--thank you! no, he didn't know i was there (elusive, and all that). he got out his cell phone and left just after i counted 30 seconds and peeled this. i had hoped he'd be storing a compass or treasure map in his coat pocket!

you can see brighton from coney island? wonderful.

how the devil are you Aowi. Ym?

^
hello! more importantly, how are you? i just heard that 1/2 of Wham! (Andrew Ridgeley) lives in Cornwall. is that true? do you see him walking about, wearing a "before you go-go" t-shirt? or is he a respectable farmer or something now? are you two friends?
