2006-09-25 // 04:30:55 ulf Oh, I think I can answer that question, as I believe that to be a rather Southern U.S. idiom and I've lived in these parts for going on 12 years now.
If someone or something really gets my goat then that means that I find said someone or something particularly irritating.
Goats were (and perhaps still are?) said to have a calming effect on horses, so it was common to be pair them with nervous horses before races.
