I think the frustrating thing is that when it doesn't work, it can look pretty ugly, I got good results with a certain Alpha and a smallish softlight. And I've found out how to save money on rejects now, too: if the contrast or exposure aren't good, I just don't take any more pictures. It either works first time or it never works. Forcing it doesn't seem to help much, so I'm trying to give that up.

I think with time, we'll all get an intuitive feel for when it will work.
