Both cold and heat were used.
Cold temps will make a very white washed out image, low contrast, to offset the effect of the heat applied. The film is VERY temp sensitive.
This is why for the ideal photo a very specific development temp range is needed. But if the early films are going to be fussy, why not exploit that on purpose.
