Thank you! Sadly, there is now an apartment building on the spot from which this photo was taken, so this vantage point is no longer available. The theater is still there, though.
2011-08-08 // 23:39:46 Lukaroid That's a really great shot and a great building.
Pleas jcoldslabs, can you explain me what's the secret of the speed Graphic camera why you getting this toy effects? It's so magic.
Thanks

Thank you for the compliment. I would be happy to explain, as best I can, how this effect is achieved.
The Speed Graphic is one of the few cameras, because of its focal plane shutter mechanism, that allows the use of the Kodak Aero Ektar lens, which you may have heard of or seen before. The advantage of this lens is that is has extraordinarily shallow depth of field when used wide open at f/2.5. In addition, the Speed Graphic allows for the lens to be tilted back (in horizontal use) or swung to the left (in vertical use) which shifts the plane of focus away from the plane of view for the image.
In this photo you can see that there is a line of focus from the near foreground grass all the way to the "Hollywood" sign. This is because the lens itself is not pointed squarely at the theater, although the camera is.
Any camera that allows the lens to be moved non-perpendicularly to the film plane will allow for this unusual focus effect, although it is more pronounced with the shallow depth of field offered by the Aero Ektar.
I hope that explanation was clear. Feel free to ask any additional questions. I'll answer them if I can. And thanks for looking at my photo!
