yes, polaroids will suffer if there are other polaroids (or something else, can also be wood etc.) leaking out chemicals next to.

for the oxidation of 55, not cleaning them for the residues, and give them a kick with a flash before storing, would speed the process.

I've been pretty surprised how well they take it not to get cleared (when I wasn't able to do so for some weeks) though.
how did your 55 negatives turn out?

Well for the 55 and 665 i used to wait from few weeks to several years and then wash and fix them in hyposulphite of sodium. When they are dry i store them in a crystal clear bag.
They are all in good condition even after 10 years.

or was the film open and stored in a box for six years, before it got exposed?

It was exposed and developed, and then forgot in a plastic box with some 55 negatives in a wet and black room. I was trying to have some result like that :
