i tried lighting a spiderweb from below to highlight it in certain areas, but it blew out the whole thing to look like rapunzel's hair or something.

Tip:
to diffuse a flashlight for a photo, just grab a piece of printer paper and a rubberband, and tighten it around the flashlight head.
