my sister recently had surgery for cochlear implants.
she was born hearing impaired, her cochleas were much smaller than normal. she's pretty much had hearing aids since she was 2 years old, i think. she's 15 now. a few months ago her hearing had deteriorated so much that she was almost completely deaf. she couldnt hear any of the music she used to listen to or hear the dialogue on her favorite tv shows. so my parents gave her the choice of having this surgery. having had grown up with some hearing - however little - she chose to get the cochlear implants.
these were taken the night before her surgery.
